Pottery – Thursday Class

Gary Merritt

  • Thursday 6:30 pm-9:00 pm

As the teacher of the Thursday night pottery class, my aim is to provide a supportive learning environment for students to develop their pottery skills and knowledge.  We are very fortunate that Liddelow Homestead has an outstanding pottery facility for student to utilise.

The class is open to all skill levels from beginners to experienced potters.  Students can choose to learn how to throw on the pottery wheel or learn to hand build and are encouraged to try both.   Most important is that the experience should be enjoyable for student and I encourage social interaction.

As a student I started pottery classes at Liddelow Homestead almost 30 years ago.  While I have almost 30 years’ pottery experience, I have no formal pottery qualifications.  I am basically a self-taught potter that has learnt what works for me and my passion is throwing on the pottery wheel.

You never stop learning with pottery as there are so many different techniques, in particular when it comes to glazing and firing.  Every time you open the kiln you are just not sure what is going to come out.  Sometimes you are happy and sometimes you are disappointed, but that is the beauty of pottery.
